Liebe Freund*innen,
im März haben wir das Magazin Am Strand mit ihrer dritten Ausgabe zum Thema Irritation zu Gast. Zudem findet im Rahmen des MaerzMusik Festivals ein Workshop zur Gaia-Hypothese, Geschichte und narrativen Strategien statt.

Wir werden einen Abend mit Beteiligten von Am Strand aus Leipzig verbringen und uns mit Irritationen und Zukunftsbeschreibungen beschäftigen. Nach einer Präsentation des Magazins wird es einen freien Austausch zu Ausdrucksmitteln und Möglichkeiten von Überraschungen in Publikationen und anderen Positionierungen sowie den Ansätzen und Inhalten von Am Strand geben. Wir bitten alle Interessierten, irritierende Objekte, Materialien und Gedanken mitzubringen.
Über Am Strand
Jede jährlich erscheinende Ausgabe von Am Strand schlägt unerwartete Positionen zu vermeintlich bekannten Phänomenen vor. In künstlerischen Arbeiten, analytischen Essays sowie freien Text- und Bildformen werden spekulativ-riskante Vorstellungen noch unbestimmter Zukünfte entwickelt. Bei allen Unterschieden im Ausdruck vereint die verschiedenen Beitragsformen eine kontraintuitive Vorgehensweise, die auf Überraschungen zielt.
Der Charakter des Magazins wird von einem transdisziplinären Zugriff auf Probleme geprägt: Bild und Text stehen nicht in einem illustrativen oder dekorativen Verhältnis zueinander, sondern sind gleichberechtigte Ausdrucksformen, die sich wechselseitig ergänzen und Phänomene durch je eigene Methoden und Mittel perspektivieren.
Der ausgabenübergreifende Grundgedanke von Am Strand ist, dass die Spekulation auf Zukünftiges inspirierende Perspektiven auf Gegenwart und Vergangenheit liefern kann, die es braucht, um Auswege aus festgefahrenen Ist-Zuständen zu finden. Am Strand versucht, einen Ort zu beschreiben, der sich ohne Außenhalt in viele Richtungen verändert und an keiner Stelle lange bleibt – was gleichermaßen für das Magazin selbst gilt, als dynamische Entwicklung des eigenen Formats als Anpassung an je aktuelle Umstände und Zukunftserwartungen (gesellschaftlich, aber auch gemeinschaftlich und persönlich). Mit jeder Ausgabe verschieben sich gemeinsame Interessen und Möglichkeiten; jede Ausgabe wird explizit zum Dokument dieses Veränderungsprozesses.

History and Time in the context of the Gaia hypothesis

The Gaia hypothesis states that there has been a leap in our relation to nature and our planet. As the current state of globalization and the discourse around the anthropocene unfolds, the question of this relation gains in importance again. The Gaia hypothesis, a concept most popular in the 1970s, asks for a different thinking with and about earth and climate change. Following Isabelle Stengers description of two histories, both steering towards collapse – one being the capitalist history of endless growth and progress, the other the fatalistic history of environmental collapse and limited resources – she suggests giving a name to this most and foremost urgent situation. Though Gaia can be conceived as a being (un être) intruding our lives she still is „a ticklish assemblage of forces that are indifferent to our reasons and our projects“. So maybe Gaia is not so much just a name but more a suggestion or signature of our current situation and of „what makes us think and lets us imagine“. It is a narrative of the now.
In the workshop we want to unfold the map around the Gaia hypothesis, look at its implications for concepts of time and history. Without following Gaia’s supposedly spiritualist connection, let us question and ground its hypothesis: How is it connected to everyday life? What might be an alternative to the current eco-capitalist realism? How to exit control phantasms of cybernetic ghosts and look for (un-)scalable cosmologies in the face of Gaia?
A more detailed program and suggested reading will be mailed out to all participants mid-March.
